A new look at Mr. Butler.

Fans of Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind will probably remember a travesty of a sequel a few years back. That book, called Scarlett, was one of the most ill-advised attempts at following a famous novel. I've always regretted reading it. So, with that memory still fresh in my mind (even 15 years later), I was hesitant to pick up Donald McCaig's attempt to follow the famous novel. McCaig's book, called Rhett Butler's People, isn't strictly a sequel. Rather, it attempts to tell the same story as GWTW from Rhett's point of view. McCaig is a well known and award winning author of Civil War era novels and I was hopeful that this would result in an interseting novel, at least.

Thankfully, the novel was better than I'd hoped. If you love GWTW, you'll probably love this book. There are some inconsistencies but I suppose that could be chalked up simply to the differences in point of view. There are also a number of instances where I thought Rhett seemed a bit too modern. Still, it's a great read. I've always really liked Rhett and enjoyed this different take on his story. Definitely a must read for GWTW fans.

This is the next book that I am going to read I think. I am glad to see that there are some people around who enjoyed it!
